Evangelical church in Mokřiny

The Evangelical Church in Mokřiny, built in 1913 according to the design of the famous architect Otto Bartning, is an architectural gem and a witness to historical changes. Originally a Lutheran church, it went through various church administrations and today belongs to the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren.
The Evangelical Church in Mokřiny is an architectural and historical gem of the region, boasting a rich past and a unique style. This originally Lutheran church, known as the Emperor Franz Joseph Jubilee Church (Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Jubiläumskirche), was built in 1912–1914 according to the design of the Berlin architect Otto Bartning. The building combines historicist and modern elements and its appearance is reminiscent of the so-called Aš Evangelical Baroque, which can also be seen in other sacral buildings in the region.
The foundation stone of the church was laid on July 14, 1912, the rough construction was completed in the spring of 1913, and the ceremonial consecration took place on November 29, 1914. In 1929, the church underwent renovation under the leadership of the builder Geipel, who modernized the facade and electrified the building. In 1937, an electric clock from the Kohlert company from Kraslice was ceremonially launched on the tower.
After World War II, major changes took place. The last German Evangelical services were held here on September 30, 1946, after which the church was handed over to the Orthodox Church, which dedicated it to Saints Cyril and Methodius. However, during the period of normalization, it ceased to serve its purpose and gradually fell into disrepair. In the summer of 1989, part of the roof even collapsed. Fortunately, after 1992, repairs were able to begin, which continued until 1996.
In 1994, the church was transferred to the ownership of the Parish of the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren in Aš, which still manages it today. The building has a rectangular ground plan with a rectangular presbytery and a dominant prismatic tower above the entrance facade. The facade is painted in yellow ochre with contrasting white pilasters and cornices.
In front of the church is a monument to the victims of the First World War, erected in 1924, which adds further historical value to the place. The Evangelical Church in Mokřiny is not only an important spiritual center, but also a fascinating architectural gem that tells the story of the entire region. Visiting it means immersing yourself in history and admiring the craftsmanship that still enchants visitors with its timeless beauty.
