Set off on cycle route 2057 and discover the westernmost corner of the Czech Republic! The route connects Hranice with Skalka u Chebu and takes you through forgotten villages, historical monuments and the beautiful nature of the Aš region. Border trails, Goethe's Rocks and Seeberg Castle await you.

Border crossing Hranice – Ebmath

Previously only for pedestrians and cyclists, today cars also pass through. The old road, along which our cycle route runs, is closed to traffic and serves only tourists and cyclists.

In the forest on the right, there once stood the settlement of Finke (Pěnkava) with nine houses and a fabric dyeing factory, which disappeared immediately after 1946. On the border there used to be a customs office and an inn called "Zur Erholung" - that is, "For recovery".

Limit

The westernmost city in the Czech Republic, it lies in the Aš promontory, where Bohemia, Bavaria and Saxony meet. With a history dating back to the 15th century and cycle routes winding along the historic borders, it is an ideal destination for cyclists.

Local routes will take you not only along former factory paths, but also across border crossings open within the Schengen area.

History lovers will be interested in the RAF memorial, commemorating the shooting down of a British bomber, or the ancient churches and urban development.

Pastures

The small village (formerly Friedersreuth) lies at an altitude of 628 m, just 4 km southwest of Hranice and a short distance from Faßmansreuth in Germany. It once had over 160 houses and over 900 inhabitants.

The first mentions date back to 1413, when the village was acquired by the Zedtwitz family. The pastures experienced industrial development, Prussian occupation and the construction of a school (1893), which was replaced by the Border Guard barracks in 1962. After the Germans were evicted, most of the houses were demolished.

Today you will find only a few houses here, but also remnants of history - a monument to the fallen from World War I and military trenches from 1962.

Stone

Kamenná, part of the municipality of Krásná, lies at an altitude of 560 m, just a short distance from Aš. The village once had over 600 inhabitants, but today there are fewer than fifty.

The first mention dates back to 1612, when the village belonged to the Zedtwitz family. Kamenná had its own school, band and railway station. After the Germans were expelled, it became depopulated and many houses were demolished.

Today you can find several ponds, the Černý Luh cottage settlement with popular swimming and a memorable tree – the Štítarský maple. Nearby is the Větrov chateau (now closed), known from the book and film The Wind Indians.

Smrcina

Just 3 km north of Aš, Smrčina Castle, the summer residence of the Zedtwitz family, once stood. It was built in 1690, gradually rebuilt, and purchased by industrialist Wilhelm Fischer at the beginning of the 20th century.

After 1945, the chateau fell into disrepair, serving as offices and a dining room for state farms. It was finally demolished in 1963 – today all you can find here is a silage pit.

Beautiful

A beautiful, westernmost village in the Czech Republic. It offers great routes, including trails 2058 and 2059, and connections to German cycle routes. Head to the westernmost point of the Czech Republic or discover history - the remains of Větrov Chateau, the site of a former brewery, or original half-timbered houses.

A sports complex, in-line skating track and workout area will add another dimension to your trip. After pedaling, relax in the local pubs and enjoy the atmosphere of this picturesque village.

Ash

Aš, the gateway to Smrčine, is an ideal destination for a cycling trip. Climb to Háj hill (758 m) with a 34 m stone lookout tower and enjoy the views of the Czech and German borderlands.

The history of the city is reminded by the Zedtwitz family, who ruled here for 600 years, the oldest stone bridge (1724), and monuments - to the American army or the textile industrialist Geipel.

Thanks to cycle routes 2058 and 2060, Aš is a great start and stop when exploring West Bohemia!

Burned out church

Just 100 m from the cycle path you will find the site of the monumental Evangelical Church of the Holy Trinity (1270). After a fire in 1960 and the subsequent removal of the ruins, the only reminder remained – a statue of the reformer Martin Luther, the only one in Bohemia.

A short distance away, you will be attracted by the 48m tower of the Church of St. Nicholas - a great landmark. History lovers can visit the museum with a unique collection of over 26,500 half pairs of gloves, which was entered into the Czech Book of Records in the spring of 2024.

Wetlands

The marshes, now part of Aš, have historical roots dating back to the 15th century.

The most important monument is the Evangelical Church from 1913 by the famous architect Otto Bartning, whose buildings are national monuments in Germany. Nearby is the Catholic Church of St. Charles Borromeo (1912).

Heaven

Nebesa, a small settlement at an altitude of 685 m, is an ideal stop for cyclists passing between Aša and Výhledy. The surrounding forests offer great terrain and a peaceful atmosphere for relaxation.

Among the historical monuments you will find the Chapel of the Virgin Mary from 1907 and an inn that attracts not only Czech but also German visitors. In 1759, a battle between the Austrian and Prussian armies took place here. The famous Goethe once traveled through Nebesa on the postal route.

At the Command

At this point you can take a break and decide – continue along the route or take a short detour to the spring of the Bílé Halštrov? This quiet location, only 2 km away, is worth a visit. A pleasant journey through the forest awaits you and the reward will be the quiet spring of this border river. A perfect place to relax and take a few photos!

Views

The views, located at an altitude of 687 m, live up to their name - from here you can enjoy beautiful scenery of the surrounding countryside. The village, with a history dating back to 1395, was once part of the estate of the Šlik family of Cheb, later, in 1629, the village fell into the possession of Hazlov. Near the pond, you can still find traces of a medieval fortress.

Rock garden

Skalka, a village located at the foot of Goethe's Hill. The biggest attraction is Goethe's Rocks - protected quartz formations, which were admired by the famous poet JW Goethe. He himself believed that the place was settled by the Romans, which was not true, but the legend attracted the first tourists.

Hazlov

The village, founded in 1224, boasts a historic castle and a once important textile industry.

The surroundings offer beautiful nature - Hazlovský stream, a deposit of the mineral egeran and trails leading to Goethový skaly.

Headland

The small village of Ostroh, known primarily for its Seeberg Castle, is a great destination for cyclists passing through Chebsk. The first mention of it dates back to 1349.

The route takes you past beautiful landscapes and historical monuments. Seeberg Castle, once a guard fortress, now attracts visitors with its exhibition about life in past centuries. An ideal place to rest before you continue on!
