Wilhelm Gustloff – lecture

Event time: 17:00

Organizer: Aš Museum

Event type: lecture

The sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff in January 1945 claimed over nine thousand lives. Six times more people died in the Baltic Sea than in the sinking of the Titanic. On board were mostly women, children and seniors. Thousands of Germans fleeing in panic at sea from the Red Army believed that the Wilhelm Gustloff would take them to safety. The end of their hopes and the end of their lives was brought about by three torpedoes fired from the Soviet submarine S-13. What preceded the disaster, what were the fates of some of the people who survived, and also the testimonies of divers who went to the wreck, is told by wreck diver Jindřich Böhm.
